Screen Australia’s online funding has helped launched the careers and concepts of everything from The Katering Show to Starting From Now, Bondi Hipsters, Aunty Donna and Superwog.

On this episode of the Screen Australia podcast, the investment managers in charge of online funding – Lee Naimo and Alyce Adams – answer the questions any online creator might need to know before hitting that ‘submit’ button on their application.

As investment managers, Lee and Alyce assess applications for online support in development, production and completion funding, and they reveal what they’re looking for, how to know how much money to ask for, and why you should get in touch before you apply. They also talk about what projects can apply for online funding, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (XR), but not factual.

“For us, we’re focused on drama or scripted content,” Alyce says, adding that Screen Australia’s Documentary Unit are focusing on online factual content independently.

The pair also talk about success stories, including the Gender Matters-supported series Sheilas, and the power of niche audiences for web series such as Mining Boom as well as Starting From Now (which has raked in millions upon millions of views worldwide).

“In online, people can find these really niche… series and really hook into them globally,” Lee says, with Alyce adding that underrepresented groups around the world are hungry for content.

Editor’s note: Lee mentions Screen Australia does not fund short films anymore through online, however short films can provide a proof of concept in applications for development funding.
