The Screen Guide

An expedition to rediscover the lost lifestyle of the tropical rainforest Aborigines of north Queensland. An ABC film crew accompanied an Australian Army trek in search of a long-lost river cave in the shadow of Mount Bartle Frere. The cave was originally found a century earlier by Norwegian zoologist Carl Sophus Lumholtz, and contains unique Aboriginal rock art and tools of stone and glass. The program recalls Lumholtz's sensitive treatment of the natives, and also the exploitation of them by the later explorer Christie Palmerston, who opened up the area to mining.
