The Screen Guide

In the first years of settlement in Australia there were more than 250 recorded Indigenous languages. In just 220 years, that figure has dropped dramatically and only nine languages are considered safe with 20-30 languages at various levels of endangerment. This story looks at how communities are retrieving their dormant languages from historic books and journals and early film and audio recordings, and maintaining those languages through promoting and teaching not only Aboriginal youth but all Australians. From the Message Stick series.
