The Screen Guide

Kakadu is the traditional homeland for Bill Neidjie and the Gagadju people. It is a land of rivers and floodplains, paperbark and eucalypt woodlands and is split by the sandstone cliffs of the ancient Arnhem Land escarpement. This is an account of how the Gagadju divide their year into six seasons, not measuring with a calendar as we do but by reading the changes in the world around them. A plant comes into flower, dragonflies swarm, a change in the wind direction or a grasshopper singing in the night - each can indicate a new season. The Gagadju are determined that knowledge of the old ways and culture will not be lost. Bill knows that the land of Kakadu will be what it has always been - home for his people and a source of their spiritual strength.
