There is a saying that 'sport doesn't build character, but reveals it.' If this is true, what can be said of a six-foot-five Englishman whose first word was 'ball', and his enthusiasm for rugby league throughout his whole life suggests he is indeed having a ball? Ever since he was a boy, Sam Burgess wanted to play rugby league. The headlines tell us he has made it, but it's unfair to label him as simply a player who runs, tackles, passes and delivers clichés. The Sam Burgess story is about a life that has experienced its most poignant moments away from the playing field.
