Margaret Pomeranz, SBS Executive Producer, was inspired by Tony Parker's book 'The Violence of our Lives' which details the lives of life-term prisoners in the USA. Margaret was fascinated by the prospect of presenting a series on Australian life-term prisoners showing an insight into society's transgressors, not to alienate, not to excuse, but to illuminate and humanise. After more than a year of research, and negotiations with NSW Corrective Services, we have our first 'lifer' on tape. He is Bobby Veen, an Aboriginal who has been incarcerated for 22 years of his 42-year life. Andrew L. Urban who has been responsible for the success of FRONT UP interviewed Bobby Veen at Parramatta Correctional Centre on Thursday 24 April 1997. Bobby talks of being one of the 'lost children', taken away from his family at the age of two and adopted by a white family in Bourke, NSW. We have an insight into his childhood, adolescent years and his thoughts on being charged with murder at aged 19.
