FLYING THE FLAG tells the intriguing story of the Eureka Flag, first flown in Ballarat during the Eureka Stockade incident in 1854. The flag takes its inspiration from the brightest constellation in the Southern skies, the Southern Cross, a powerful symbol of a new land where migrants from the Old World had come together hopeful of forging a new community which would unite the many nationalities attracted to the gold fields of Victoria. This community deemed that the old injustices and inequalities of European political and social systems would have no place in the new land. FLYING THE THE FLAG explores why the flag was made, who designed it and made it, what happened to it and what it means to contemporary Australia.
