In keeping with the East West theme already established, the new season explores the ramifications of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan through crimes committed in Australia. What happened during the war in the opium fields of the Chora Valley, and the collateral damage to civilians in Tikrit, comes home to the streets of Lakemba and the malls of Cabramatta.
This is the story of two detectives – one a Muslim, the other Anglo-Australian and the battle between them for survival. It is also a metaphor for the fear that exists between East and West when the two men search for love, approval and forgiveness as their destinies collide.
The documentary will offer a unique immersive experience into the heart of the world’s second largest refugee camp, Za’atari, which is currently at crisis point. Since erupting two years ago, the war in Syria has claimed some 100,000 lives and caused an exodus to a scale not seen in decades. Millions of Syrians have been displaced, pouring into neighbouring countries to live in makeshift camps under extremely harsh conditions. It has been described as one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time.
In September 2003, Palestinian-Australian filmmaker Sherine Salama travelled to the besieged compound of Yasser Arafat. She had a hunch that his days were numbered. After a long, frustrating and often comical struggle, she finally succeeded in interviewing Arafat in October 2004. In an extraordinary twist of fate, Arafat died the following month. THE LAST DAYS OF YASSER ARAFAT tells the final chapter in the story of one of the most controversial public figures of our time. (Also available in a 56 min version.)
A WEDDING IN RAMALLAH is a compelling and intimate observational documentary set in the West Bank town of Ramallah. It uses the dramatic events surrounding the wedding of a young Palestinian couple as a way of exploring life under occupation for ordinary Palestinians.
