The Australian artist Sidney Nolan returns home from England to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Sydney University on his sixtieth birthday. The film follows his activities in Australia, England and Africa. His travels are seen against a broad canvas of his output from the past 40 years - an output that has made Nolan the most famous Australian painter of any generation.
