Off Australia's northeast coast lies a wonder of the world; a living structure so big it can be seen from space, more complex than any city, and so diverse it hosts a third of all fish species in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef as we know it -- 8,000 years old -- is dying in our lifetime. Can We Save The Reef? is the story of Australian and international scientists racing to understand this natural wonder, and employing bold new science to save it.
A young woman makes history in the deep sea — amid the drama, dangers and victories of blazing new trails, in a place more hostile, extreme and unexplored than outer space.
In the busy harbour of Noumea, a tropical paradise is under threat from an influx of huge, hand-fed Bull Sharks. New Caledonian scientist Dr Laurent Vigliola needs the help of Australian shark scientist Dr Will Robbins, who will travel from Australia to apply his groundbreaking shark relocation technique. Together, they will trial a world-first plan to save the sharks, and learn their secrets, as they catch, crane-lift, and relocate several Bull sharks from in town to a pristine coral reef. Their combined scientific innovation will show us if the sharks can adapt to their new home away from people, and learn to feed in the wild. Dr Robbins hopes to use the results of these sharks' behaviour back in Australia, where he specialises in reducing the threat of human-shark interactions. Australia’s current policy is to catch and kill large sharks near public beaches.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Western Australia shows you it is anything but.
