As the Chinese economy has expanded demand for turtles (both for food and traditional medicine) has risen dramatically. Rare turtles now fetch up to US$2000 per kilo. This cultural problem has experts trying many desperate measures before it becomes to late. Eighty to 90 species of turtle are now on the brink of extinction.
