Australian films win at Sitges

Australian short film The Landing has taken out the top prize for short film at the 46th Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia, the world's leading fantasy film festival.

The Landing is written/directed by Josh Tanner and written/produced by Jade van der Lei.

The festival jury announced its decision at the closing gala and awards ceremony over the weekend. The Landing tells the story of Edward, a middle-aged man who returns to the farm of his childhood, desperate to uncover a horrifying secret. It had its world premiere at Sitges as part of the Official Fantàstic Competition Shorts section.

“To win best short film in competition at Sitges is the best outcome we could have hoped for at our world premiere of The Landing,” said Jade van der Lei. “It is a wonderful acknowledgement of all of the hard work and efforts of the cast, crew, investors, sponsors and supporters of the film.”

The Carnet Jove Award for best feature film from the Midnight X-Treme Category was presented to 100 Bloody Acres, written and directed by Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes and produced by Julie Ryan and Kate Croser. The film is a comedy-horror about two brothers who run a struggling organic blood and bone fertiliser business, showing the lengths some small business operators will go to.

This year’s festival ran from 11-20 October, sold approximately 60,000 tickets and was well attended by the public and the film industry.
