Director of First Nations

POSITION SUMMARY

First Nations stories are integral to Australia’s cultural landscape and the work of Screen Australia. The Director of First Nations reports to the CEO and is responsible for the development and implementation of a holistic First Nations strategy, aligned with the Australian Government's National Cultural Policy – Revive. The position will also have oversight of the First Nations budget, programs and industry initiatives, working closely with the CEO/COO and the First Nations team to champion industry practitioners and build opportunities for growth and visibility. Domestic and international travel may be required as part of this role.
 

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the CEO and Head of First Nations, develop and implement strategic initiatives for First Nations content in alignment with the National Cultural Policy - Revive.
  • Foster collaboration and partnerships to support and enhance First Nations content.
  • Drive strategic collaboration with the Content & Operations and SPI departments to foster synergy and achieve measurable, impactful results.
  • Oversee the allocation of long-term investment and budget plans for First Nations content.
  • Oversee and provide strategic guidance and leadership to the First Nations department, ensuring alignment with Screen Australia’s organisational goals and First Nations cultural objectives.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of First Nations projects from development through to delivery, ensuring successful outcomes in line with agreed annual key performance indicators.
  • Lead and mentor a team of First Nations professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture, and promoting a commitment to organisational goals and values.
  • Advise on policies and practices to enhance the First Nations Department’s involvement in the screen industry.
  • Represent the organisation in industry forums and panels.
  • Working closely with the Head of First Nations, tracking and reporting on First Nations projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and compliance with funding requirements.
  • Promote gender equity, diversity, and inclusion within the screen sector, focusing on First Nations content.
  • Contribute to developing departmental strategies, programs, and processes.
  • Propose and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Other duties as required.


 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Film Studies, Media, or relevant field.
  • Extensive experience in senior roles within the screen sector, particularly in developing, producing, or directing First Nations content.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture, society, and contemporary issues with a deep understanding of and commitment to the principles outlined in the National Cultural Policy, Revive.
  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to make strategic decisions and provide leadership in a creative environment.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and relationship-building abilities.
  • High-level knowledge of the Australian and international screen industry, including trends and key players.
  • Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on creative projects.
  • Proven people management and team leadership skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A passion for promoting and supporting First Nations stories and cultural heritage in the screen industry.
