Muriel's Wedding: 27 years on
Director of Photography Martin McGrath reflects on his time making the classic Australian film, Muriel’s Wedding 27 years after its cinematic release.
On the 29th of September 1994 an Australian comedy had its theatrical release and won the world over with its unique brand of Aussie humour. For the Director of Photography Martin McGrath, Muriel’s Wedding’s success was never in doubt.
“I knew it was going to be special, without a doubt,” McGrath reflects 27 years later. “And I was not prepared for the wave of emotion that hit me seeing it [at Cannes Film Festival]… I was weeping for half an hour afterwards.”
In this behind the scenes video, McGrath reveals the lengths writer/director P.J. Hogan went to find the right church location for the iconic wedding scene, his first discussions with the director about the project and his favourite scene from the film.
