Black Divaz: meet the filmmaker

Director Adrian Russell Wills talks about his new documentary Black Divaz, which follows the inaugural Miss First Nation drag pageant.

Wills explains how drag is used as an artistic expression, why representation in film is so important, and the difference between directing a documentary such as Black Divaz compared to TV dramas like Redfern Now and Wentworth.

Black Divaz represents the opportunity for young LGBTQI people in our community to see themselves on screen,” he says.

“I think a film like this, to me, is vital.”

Black Divaz premieres at the Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival 28 February at 6.30pm before screening on NITV 1 March at 8.30pm and on SBS 4 March at 11pm, following the broadcast of the 2018 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
