Export Market Development Grants, 2003/04–2016/17

The Australian Government provides financial assistance for businesses seeking to develop export markets through the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme, administered by Austrade.

This scheme assists small and medium exporters to seek out and develop export markets by partially reimbursing their expenditure on export promotion, such as travel and sample costs.

Businesses can benefit from these grants if they meet the eligibility criteria; that is, they must:

be an Australian-based enterprise with an Australian Business Number (ABN)
promote the export of their Australian goods, services, intellectual property and know-how of Australian origin
meet a minimum threshold for the amount spent on eligible export promotion per annum during the last financial year or, if a first-time applicant, the last two financial years (currently $15,000, previously $20,000 from 2010/11 to 2012/13, $10,000 in 2009/10 and $15,000 from 2003/04 to 2008/09)
have total annual income under a maximum threshold (currently $50 million; $30 million prior to 2008/09).

Austrade provided approximately $7.40 million in 2016/17 in export grants to companies in the audiovisual industries. This represents 5.7 per cent of the total support to exports ($131.1 million was paid to 3,166 exporting businesses in 2016/17).
