At last there is an, albeit brief, mention of "the predecessor agency" Film Australia. In one form or another Film Australia has been the active Government filmmaking body for over sixty years.
Film Australia no longer exists as a filmmaking body. What concerns me is what will become of FA's vast and incredibly valuable library and archival holdings (both film and stills) stretching back a century. This is surely one of the most valuable archival resources in the country. As with all archival holdings its management and care and marketing requires a specialist staff. For instance many of the films have protocols attached to them, such as binding agreements with indigenous communities regarding their use. The present Library staff has an intimate knowledge of all this.
It therefore seems imperative that the old Film Australia Library, with its specialist and experienced staff, survives in an integrated and somewhat independent form to continue their guardianship and promotion of this material. Whether this should be done within Screen Australia or elsewhere is hard to say. It seems that Screen Australia is solely concerned with funding and marketing of new films and therefore not the body to look after this archival holding.
