‘Dances’ is a 5-minute documentary which explores queer experiences with app culture through dance and animation. Apps like Tinder, Grindr, Scruff, OkCupid are central to the queer community; members of this community pioneered the technology in the late 2000s. Partly due to a lack of acceptance in broader society, LGBTQIA communities have flourished online. Dance has also long held a place of importance in the queer community, too. But it couldn't be further from the online world, the virtual, because it is so physical. It is so real. But by pairing dance with true online interactions sourced from the community, using animated chat bubbles interacting with choreography inspired by these real conversations, this film will show that behind the online personas, the dismissive comments, the endless streams of “hey how u?”, there are real people with real emotions who just want to connect.
