When the Australian Government stopped the boats, I drove up a hill in Indonesia to 'meet the refugees’. Unsure of what I would find, I discovered photographers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, teachers and families.
Almost immediately I met two Afghan Hazara refugees, filmmaker Khadim Dai and photographer Muzafar Ali, and we started making films together. Those films helped build a school and a community. That community and school then became a platform for other Australians also wanting to help and find out more about the people trying to get to Australia.
