The Screen Guide

In traditional Arabic cultures, belly dance (raks sharqui) is widely enjoyed, but strictly contained. Samia Mikhail, a Lebanese filmmaker and raks sharqui teacher, explores the sexual politics of the dance both from a contemporary western and oriental perspective. She examines what it is that Australian women see in the dance, and questions why her community here remains locked into social attitudes which belong to another time and another part of the world.
