MOTHERLAND is a documentary shot in black and white which begins as a whimsical portrait of two grandmothers in modern-day Queensland, and goes on to look at their relatives in contemporary Latvia, a year after liberation from Soviet rule. Far from being an 'immigrant experience' program, it is allusive, experimental and emotive, using original Latvian music. It is a study of motherhood, exile and occupation and of how a culture can endure, even over three generations and 12,000 miles.
