Screen Australia supports the development, production, promotion and distribution of Australian narrative (drama) and documentary screen content. The agency invests directly in Australian film, television, online titles and games. It also administers the Producer Offset tax incentive for Australian screen stories.
The agency also offers sector-building programs such as Enterprise, initiatives including Gender Matters and funding through Screen Australia’s First Nations Department.
Screen Australia represents Australia’s screen industry internationally, including at festivals, markets and major awards. The agency also tracks and reports on industry health, maintains a database of Australian titles called The Screen Guide and provides free industry resources via Screen News.
Please note, Screen Australia does not:
- Fund content which is not documentary or narrative (also known in the industry as ‘drama’).
- Fund non-Australian companies. Foreign creators from partner countries can be attached to Official Co-productions.
- Produce titles in-house.
- Provide PR or marketing services for individual titles.
- Accept unsolicited scripts or ‘pre-assess’ applications before they are submitted.
- Authorise the exhibition/broadcast of content.
- Disclose who has benefited from the Producer Offset, as this is governed by tax secrecy laws.
- Administer the Location or PDV Offsets. (These are handled by the Department of Communications and the Arts).
- Supply contact information for creators. The Screen Guide directory makes it easy to find who has produced most Australian drama and documentary titles.
