Overnight rental rates for new release videos, 1989–2001

From 1989 to 2001, Video Trader provided industry-wide figures on the average price of overnight rental of videos (VHS only). According to Video Trader, the average rental price jumped considerably in 2000 with the introduction of the GST, then rose 2.1 per cent to $6.62 in 2001.

The only recent indications of rental price have come from Blockbuster Video. In 2005 the average rental price of a new-release video (VHS or DVD) in Blockbuster stores was $4.50, falling from a range of $5.50 to $6.50 in 2004.
